Step-by-Step Guide: How to Become a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)

To become a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), an individual must meet the following requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent: Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent to be eligible for the certification exam.

Work Experience: Candidates must have a minimum of one year of full-time experience in the central service or sterile processing department of a healthcare facility.

Education: Candidates must have completed a central service or sterile processing education program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

Exam: Candidates must pass the CRCST certification exam. The exam is offered by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) and covers topics such as sterilization, decontamination, instrumentation, and management.

Continuing Education: CRCSTs are required to maintain their certification by completing continuing education units (CEUs) every three years.

Re-Certification: recertification is required every 3 years
