Firefighter-medic loses battle with leukemia

Marcia Rosecky had been a firefighter for over 15 years; the fire chief said she was “a super person”

BROOKFIELD, Wis. — A Wisconsin firefighter-paramedic died on Saturday following a battle with leukemia that she contracted from firefighting.

WISN.com reported Marcia Rosecky, 41, was a wife, a mother to a 5-year-old son and a firefighter with the Brookfield Fire Department. Her husband is also a firefighter.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we’ve lost her, and we miss her already,” said Fire Chief Charlie Meyers. “She was just a really super person to the department.”

Rosecky began her firefighting career in 1997 before there was much awareness about the link between cancer and firefighting.

“Much of that is believed because anytime you burn anything, there are carcinogens that are produced by that burning,” said Meyers.

The Brookefield Fire Department flew its flag at half-mast on Monday to honor Rosecky.
